Leukemia Lullaby Ashen mare plodded along a stony path with her ears flopping and nose skimming the earth. Into the shadowy forest she went with one thing on her mind - berries. Despite it having thousands of rotting limbs and moldy trunks, the forest managed to produce the most delightful black berries to feast upon. She exhaled a loud snort from her pulsing nares, ready for the task. Finding them wasn't the challenge though, they grew in tangled mounds near the base of almost any tree. The real problem was the inch long, ruby thorns that looked like a claw ripped straight from a house cat. Even a tiny poke from one of them could draw blood and cause a fever for at least half of the day. In addition to avoiding the thorns, Lullaby also had to try not to kill the entire plant with her oh so wonderful "gift". If she nosed around in the bush too long, the vines would curl up and the juicy berries would shrivel and die.
At last she discovered a sufficient patch of berries. Wide eyed, she delved in with her lips puckered as small as she could get them. One...two...three of the tiny balls were resting on a her tongue within a few minutes. She smashed them up and gulped down the juices with a humble grin. Aiming for a particularly plump berry in the rear of the bush, she sleeked back her ears and slid her head into the thorny encasement. She managed to suck the berry from its stem and being too excited, she jerked her head out of the mound too fast. Her jaws came together with a crunch and her smoldering bronze eyes narrowed at the site of blood sparkling on the tip of her nose. She quivered and shook her head, painting the bark of the oak a bright red. The long tear in her skin continued to dribble, so she used her tongue to awkwardly clean it for several minutes. She was completely absorbed by the silly task that she didn't realize she had stepped further into the bush of berries, killing it rather quickly. The once ripe and elastic vines dried and wrapped around her front legs tightly, puncturing them slightly. Lullaby let out a groan in pain and attempted to yank back her hoof, only to find she was trapped...
